COEUR D’ALENE, ID — The Idaho Transportation Department is urging drivers to prepare for severe weather expected to impact North and North Central Idaho beginning Wednesday evening and continuing through Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued a severe storm warning for the Inland Northwest, with forecasts calling for wind gusts up to 60–70 mph and heavy snowfall in higher elevations.
Mountain areas could see significant accumulation, with up to 2–3 feet of snow possible overnight at Lookout Pass.
ITD says crews are fully staffed and ready to respond. Snow removal will focus on high-elevation routes, while crews also work to clear hazards such as fallen trees and debris as conditions allow.
Cleanup may be delayed in areas where downed power lines are present. Utility crews must first secure the lines before roadway debris can be safely removed.
Drivers are encouraged to limit travel during the storm. Officials warn that strong winds may create dangerous conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles such as commercial trucks, travel trailers, and RVs.
Motorists traveling over mountain passes should carry traction devices and emergency supplies in case of closures or delays. Drivers are also reminded not to drive over downed power lines and to treat non-working traffic signals as four-way stops.
“Our crews are ready to respond to whatever this storm brings,” District Engineer Ryan Hawkins said. “The best thing the public can do is prepare ahead of time and limit travel when possible.”
