OROFINO, ID — Two people were arrested following a high-speed pursuit late Sunday night on U.S. Highway 12, according to the Orofino Police Department.
Police said an officer was conducting stationary traffic enforcement near mile marker 43 around 10:24 p.m. on March 8 when a 2015 Ford Taurus was observed traveling eastbound at what was described as a high rate of speed. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver allegedly failed to yield, leading to a pursuit along the highway.
During the chase, officers reported seeing an object thrown from the vehicle near mile marker 46. Authorities later located a Ziploc-style bag that investigators believe had contained marijuana. The item was recovered with assistance from deputies with the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office.
According to police, the pursuit continued eastbound with speeds reportedly exceeding 100 miles per hour until about mile marker 70, where the driver stopped and was taken into custody.
The driver was identified by police as Zachary Koenig, who authorities said was on probation in Nez Perce County at the time of the incident. Koenig was arrested on suspicion of felony eluding an officer, destroying evidence, and possession or use of drug paraphernalia.
A passenger in the vehicle, identified as Nicole Lawrence, was also arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana and destroying evidence.
The Orofino Police Department thanked the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office and other assisting agencies for their assistance during the incident.
