OROFINO, ID — According to a Facebook post from Clearwater County, officials are warning residents about increasing costs and operational challenges at the county’s transfer station, including the likelihood of a future fee increase.

In the post, Solid Waste Manager Jerod Robinett said expenses tied to fuel, labor, equipment, electricity, repairs and landfill fees have more than doubled since the county’s last rate adjustment in 2021. The transfer station operates solely on user fees, and current rates are no longer sufficient to cover those rising costs.

Additional increases are expected, with landfill disposal fees scheduled to rise by 25% beginning January 1, 2027.

The county is also dealing with temporary transportation issues. Due to restrictions at its usual landfill in Asotin, waste is currently being transported to Missoula, adding to both costs and logistical challenges.

Officials said Clearwater County has some of the lowest solid waste fees in the region and has delayed raising rates as long as possible. However, they said a fee increase will be necessary to maintain services, complete repairs and continue operations.

The post also thanked residents for taking part in a recent cleanup day, which resulted in record amounts of waste collected.
