SpaceX founding member Tom Mueller to keynote U of I Engineering Design EXPO

MOSCOW, ID — University of Idaho alumnus and renowned rocket propulsion expert Tom Mueller will deliver a keynote address during the College of Engineering’s Engineering Design EXPO on Friday, May 1.

Mueller’s presentation is scheduled from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. at ICCU Arena on the Moscow campus. The event is free and open to the public.

A native of St. Maries, Mueller is recognized as one of the world’s leading propulsion experts, with a career spanning more than three decades. He was a co-founding member and one of the first employees at SpaceX, where he led development of the Merlin, Draco and SuperDraco engines used in Falcon rockets and Dragon spacecraft.

Mueller is currently the founder and CEO of Impulse Space, a company focused on in-space propulsion systems, orbital transfer vehicles and planetary landers.

The keynote is part of the Engineering Design EXPO, a long-running showcase of student innovation in engineering and technology. Prior to the keynote, the public can view student capstone projects from 9 a.m. to noon inside ICCU Arena.

Projects featured at the EXPO come from the university’s Interdisciplinary Senior Capstone Design Program, where students collaborate in teams on industry-sponsored and faculty-supported projects. The program emphasizes real-world design, testing and prototype development.

Community members, industry partners and educators are invited to attend, explore student work and participate in judging projects during the event.

Additional information about the EXPO is available through the University of Idaho College of Engineering.
