KAMIAH, ID — A section of Forest Road 250 in the Black Canyon area remains closed after severe winter storms caused significant landslides and debris damage along the route, according to the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests.
Forest officials said the closure is in place near milepost 55.5 while crews work to remove debris and repair the damaged roadway. Kelly Creek remains accessible through Deception Saddle, though officials warned the route is not recommended for vehicles pulling trailers. Travelers also cannot continue beyond the Black Canyon section on Road 250.
The forest also warned visitors about extensive blowdown throughout the Kelly Creek area that could create additional safety hazards and access issues.
“Last winter’s storms were particularly damaging to the North Fork,” Acting North Fork District Ranger Katie Rhode said in a statement. “We have had massive blowdown and erosion, but our staff is working hard to restore access to this treasured section of the forests. We will provide prompt updates when access is restored.”
As warmer weather brings more recreationists into the forest, officials are encouraging visitors to make alternate plans and avoid the affected area. Areas farther downriver reportedly have less storm damage and remain accessible.
The Forest Service said road repair and restoration work is being prioritized by crews currently working in the field.
