PULLMAN, WA — Cybersecurity experts, students and Department of Defense personnel will gather at Washington State University May 18–22 for the fifth annual VICEROY Northwest Institute for Cybersecurity Education and Research summer workshop.
The event, hosted on the WSU Pullman campus, will bring together participants from WSU and partner universities across the Pacific Northwest for presentations, hands-on activities and discussion sessions focused on cybersecurity operations and emerging technologies. The sessions are free and open to the public.
Workshop topics will include agentic AI and security, security of AI systems, post-quantum security, hardware security, web security, cyber ethics, and journalism and security.
CJ Maciag, VICEROY national director and director for Cyber-Spectrum Academic Engagement in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, will serve as keynote speaker.
Participants will also tour Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories campuses in Pullman and Moscow and attend a cybersecurity industry panel scheduled for May 21. A research showcase and certificate ceremony recognizing CySER program participants will take place May 18.
A new addition to this year’s workshop will feature a panel discussion with current and former CySER students sharing their experiences in the program.
“In a new workshop feature this year, we are excited to include a student panel in the agenda where current and former CySER students will share their experiences from participating in the program,” said Assefaw Gebremedhin, director of the VICEROY CySER Institute and Berry Family Distinguished Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
The CySER Institute was established in 2021 through a U.S. Department of Defense VICEROY initiative award aimed at strengthening cybersecurity education and workforce development. The institute provides cybersecurity training for ROTC students and civilian workers while offering degree and certificate programs in cybersecurity and related fields.
WSU’s CySER Institute is part of a consortium that includes Montana State University, the University of Idaho and Central Washington University.
