BINGHAM COUNTY, ID — A traffic stop near Pocatello late Sunday night led to the seizure of several pounds of narcotics following a pursuit involving the Idaho State Police Domestic Highway Enforcement team.
According to Idaho State Police, the incident began just before midnight on May 18 when a trooper observed a sedan with California license plates fail to signal while turning from Interstate 86 onto Interstate 15 near Pocatello. When the trooper attempted to stop the vehicle near milepost 74 in Bannock County, the driver reportedly failed to yield, leading to a pursuit.
ISP said the pursuit continued through a construction zone where traffic had been diverted onto southbound U.S. Highway 91. During the chase, the sedan allegedly used the shoulder to pass semi-trucks, struck a construction sign and ignored instructions from construction flaggers. Authorities said the pursuit ended after the Fort Hall Police Department deployed spike strips near the Fort Hall Indian Reservation.
The driver, identified by ISP as a 40-year-old man from Fargo, North Dakota, was taken into custody without further incident.
Troopers reported finding approximately one pound of fentanyl powder, two pounds of methamphetamine, more than two pounds of cocaine and about one-half pound of marijuana inside the vehicle.
The man was booked into the Bingham County Jail on probable cause charges that include trafficking fentanyl, trafficking methamphetamine, trafficking cocaine, felony possession of marijuana and felony eluding. Charges are allegations, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
ISP said the Domestic Highway Enforcement team is part of Gov. Brad Little’s Esto Perpetua initiative and works with multiple agencies to combat drug trafficking across Idaho.
