Pullman Man Convicted of Rape in the Third Degree

COLFAX, WA — Erick Leal has been convicted of one count of Rape in the Third Degree following a trial in Whitman County Superior Court, according to Senior Deputy Prosecutor Tessa Scholl.

The case stemmed from a reported incident involving a woman referred to in court as Jane Doe. Scholl praised Jane Doe for her resilience, stating that her willingness to testify and face retraumatization in court was essential to securing the conviction. “Without her unending strength on the stand and throughout the trial, a conviction would not have been possible,” Scholl said.

Leal now faces a standard sentencing range of six to twelve months in jail, with Judge Roger Sandberg unable to deviate from that range. Scholl noted she will recommend the maximum sentence of twelve months. Upon release, Leal will be required to register as a sex offender for ten years and will be under Department of Corrections supervision. A Sexual Assault Protection Order will remain in effect for five years to protect the victim.

The case was investigated by Sergeant Brett Boyd, who Scholl commended for his efforts on behalf of the Washington State University community.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 25, 2025, in Whitman County Superior Court.
