STANLEY, ID – Residents near Stanley, Idaho may have felt a shake or two over the past day, with 20 separate quakes recorded in the region between early Monday and Tuesday morning. The strongest measured a magnitude 4.0, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquakes were centered roughly nine miles northwest of Stanley, in a seismically active zone near the Sawtooth Fault. While the frequent shaking raised concerns, there have been no reports of injuries or significant damage.

Seismologists say this cluster of earthquakes, sometimes referred to as a swarm, is not unusual for the area. Stanley sits in a geologically dynamic part of central Idaho that has experienced increased seismic activity since a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck in March 2020—the second-largest quake in Idaho’s recorded history. Thousands of smaller aftershocks have followed over the years.
