PULLMAN, WA – Washington State University is urging the public to stop harassing its research bears after receiving multiple reports of individuals attempting to poke the animals with sticks and branches.
The university emphasized that the bears, which are part of ongoing scientific research, are protected by state law. Interfering with them is not only dangerous but also illegal. According to RCW 9.08.090, harming a research animal is a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
WSU Police reminded the public that the area is under video surveillance, and any inappropriate behavior will be recorded and reported.
Officials are asking visitors to respect the research facility and wildlife, and to report any concerning activity to campus authorities.
“Let’s keep our campus safe and respectful—for people and wildlife alike,” the university stated.
