Grass Fire Near Alpowa Pass Prompts Traffic Diversions on U.S. Highway 12

GARFIELD COUNTY, WA — A grass fire broke out Wednesday afternoon along U.S. Highway 12 near milepost 413, just west of the Alpowa Pass summit, prompting emergency response and significant traffic disruptions.

According to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, the fire is producing heavy smoke, which is severely limiting visibility in the area. Westbound traffic is currently being rerouted onto Ledgerwood Road, while eastbound travelers are being diverted onto Kirby Mayview Road.

Emergency responders from Columbia County Fire, Washington State Patrol, and Washington Department of Transportation are assisting at the scene.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes while fire crews work to contain the blaze. No injuries or structural threats have been reported at this time.
