BOISE, ID – Idaho’s 44 counties will receive a combined total of $42.97 million in federal Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) funding for fiscal year 2025, according to an announcement by U.S. Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch. The payments, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, are intended to offset the loss of property tax revenue in counties with large tracts of federally owned land.
Local governments often depend on these annual payments to support essential public services such as law enforcement, firefighting, education, and road maintenance.
In North Central Idaho, the following counties will receive:
- Idaho County – $2,264,963 for 4,532,689 federally owned acres
- Clearwater County – $988,232 for 845,357 acres
- Latah County – $317,541 for 101,703 acres
- Lewis County – $10,653 for 3,081 acres
- Nez Perce County – $108,530 for 31,905 acres
“These PILT payments are critical for rural counties like ours,” said Senator Crapo. “They help ensure that communities have the resources necessary to provide public safety and infrastructure despite large portions of untaxable federal land.”
The funding formula for PILT is based on the number of federal acres within a county and its population. Nationwide, the U.S. Department of the Interior collects over $20 billion annually in revenues from public lands, some of which support PILT and other federal programs.
