Lightning Sparks Wildfires in Asotin and Garfield Counties

CLARKSTON, WA – An early morning lightning storm ignited multiple wildfires across Asotin and Garfield Counties just after 4:30 a.m. Monday, prompting a large-scale firefighting response throughout the region.

In Asotin County, crews from Asotin County Fire District #1, the City of Asotin, and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources responded swiftly to a blaze 15 miles west of the Clarkston Heights near Peola Road. The fire, named the Peola Fire, was contained at approximately 10 acres and primarily burned sagebrush.

A more serious fire in Garfield County, located near the county line, spread rapidly to more than 500 acres due to gusty winds that caused flare-ups throughout the day. Firefighters from Garfield County Fire District #1, Asotin County Fire District #1, Clarkston Fire, Asotin Fire, Blue Mountain Fire District, and multiple local and state agencies worked together to contain the flames. A bulldozer from Columbia County also joined the firefighting effort.

Asotin County Fire District #1 Chief Noel Hardin praised the collaborative response under difficult conditions, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. “The air support was critical in helping us contain the perimeter of the Garfield Fire. The teamwork between local, state, and federal agencies was key to preventing further spread,” Hardin said.

State mobilization resources were deployed to assist with the Garfield County fire, bringing in additional aerial support and firefighting personnel from across Washington. Landowners and community volunteers also played a vital role in defending properties, with helicopter assistance provided by Leading Edge Aviation.

Two firefighters were treated for heat-related issues, but no other injuries have been reported. The cause of both fires has been confirmed as lightning.

Fire crews continue to monitor both fire zones and suppress remaining hot spots. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the affected areas while operations are ongoing.
