CLARKSTON, WA – High winds across the region Wednesday contributed to several wildfires in Asotin County and nearby areas, keeping fire crews busy into the night.

According to Asotin County FIre District #1, a fire broke out just after 11:00 p.m. along Highway 12, about 10 miles west of Clarkston. The wind-driven blaze prompted a response from Asotin County Fire District #1, with support from the Lewiston Fire Department, Clarkston Fire Department, Asotin Fire Department, and Wheatland Fire District.

Firefighters quickly contained the fire, but crews remained on scene into early Thursday morning to put out hot spots in dense brush and wooded areas.

Earlier Wednesday, Asotin County firefighters responded to two separate wildland fires — one off Knottgrass Road and another near Valentine Ridge in Garfield County. Both were contained.

Meanwhile, a large wind-driven wildfire erupted off Highway 127 in Whitman County and continued to grow Wednesday afternoon.

No injuries were reported in connection with any of the fires in Asotin or Garfield counties. The cause of the fires remains under investigation.
