Fish & Game Officers Investigate Elk Harvesting Violation Near Bovill

BOVILL, ID – Idaho Fish and Game officers are investigating a violation of state law after two elk were harvested in Bob’s Creek near Bovill, but the required edible portions were not fully salvaged.

Senior Conservation Officer Brian Perkes confirmed the discovery of the elk, which were found between Monday, Oct. 13, and Thursday, Oct. 15. Upon investigation, it was determined that the tenderloins, a key edible portion of the animal, had not been retrieved.

State law mandates that hunters remove all edible portions from big game animals, including hind quarters, front quarters, loins, and tenderloins. Leaving any of these parts behind in the field is considered a misdemeanor violation under Idaho Code 36-1202. Perkes noted that some hunters use the “gutless method” of field dressing, which, while efficient, still requires the removal of the tenderloins.

“Many hunters see the gutless method as an easier way to retrieve their animal,” said Perkes. “However, hunters are still required to extract the tenderloins when using this method.”

Idaho Fish and Game is urging anyone with information on this incident to come forward. Information can be reported to the Fish and Game Clearwater Regional Office at (208) 799-5010, the Citizens Against Poaching hotline at (800) 632-5999, or through the Fish and Game enforcement tip line. Reports can remain anonymous, and individuals who provide information that leads to a citation may be eligible for financial rewards.
