CLARKIA, ID – A search for two overdue hunters in the backcountry outside Clarkia ended in tragedy on Wednesday, November 6, when one of the individuals was found deceased, according to the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities received a call that morning reporting the pair overdue after they had phoned a friend the night before, saying their vehicle was stuck in the snow. The friend could not determine their location but provided details about their usual hunting area.
A backcountry search team was immediately deployed to begin looking for the hunters, assisted by family members and friends. Throughout the day, the Sheriff’s Office attempted to locate them using phone pings, but efforts proved unsuccessful.
Later, family members discovered the pair. Investigators said their pickup truck had become stuck in the snow, prompting the male hunter to take an ATV in search of help. The rough terrain and deep snow caused the ATV to become immobilized as well.
While the two tried to walk out, the male hunter reportedly passed away. The female hunter stayed with him until rescuers arrived.
The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to the family and thanked all who helped in the search effort. The name of the deceased has not been released at this time.
