Critchfield Unveils Simplified Financial Transparency Tool for Idaho Schools

BOISE, ID – Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield announced a new effort to make school finance more accessible and understandable to the public. The State Department of Education has created a streamlined transparency document that gives residents a clear view of where education dollars come from and how they are spent.

The new resource, now available for districts and charter schools, compiles essential fiscal information—funding sources, audited prior-year expenses, and staff and student data—into one simplified format. Each district and charter school is required to post the completed document on its website and provide copies upon request.

Critchfield said the goal is to “strip away the complexity and jargon” that often surround discussions about school budgets, giving parents and taxpayers an easy way to understand how financial decisions impact student outcomes.

“For parents and taxpayers, it demystifies school budgets and empowers them to engage more effectively with their local schools,” Critchfield said. “For educators and school leaders, it helps communicate their needs and accomplishments and ensure resources are aligned with student outcomes – particularly for students who may have higher-cost needs, such as those in special education.”

She emphasized that transparency builds trust between schools and their communities and strengthens public confidence in how education funding is used. The simplified financial form, she said, provides “a snapshot of school fiscal health” and serves as a bridge between education officials and Idaho families.

Districts and charters can access the new tool and related resources through the Idaho State Department of Education’s Budget, Grant, and Fiscal Operations webpage.
