Another Chronic Wasting Disease Case Detected in North Spokane

SPOKANE COUNTY, WA — Washington State wildlife officials have confirmed another case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in Game Management Unit 124, marking the latest detection in the same north Spokane area where three cases were identified last year.

According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), test results returned late last week confirmed CWD in an adult male white-tailed deer. This brings Washington’s total confirmed cases to six, including five detected in 2024.

The Spokane Tribe also reported that a deer from the Spokane Reservation tested positive during initial screening and is now undergoing secondary testing.

WDFW continues to document confirmed cases on its CWD information page, where hunters can view an updated positive-case map.

With deer, elk, and moose seasons ongoing through December, WDFW is reminding hunters that all cervids harvested or salvaged in the Eastern Region are required to be tested for CWD. Hunters transporting an animal from the region to another part of the state must ensure testing is completed before leaving the area.

More information on testing locations, requirements, and CWD safety guidelines can be found at wdfw.wa.gov/cwd.
