CLARKSTON, WA – Firefighters in Asotin County attacked a grass and vegetation fire Sunday evening.
At about 8:15 p.m., fire crews were called to the Grandview Drive and 16th Street area for a large fire threatening at least 3 homes.
According to Asotin Country Fire District #1, the fire was burning in Juniper bushes, trees and other foliage and tall grass. Firefighters were able to contain the fire from spreading within a few minutes, but remained on scene for about 2 hours mopping up hotspots in thick bushes and vines.
The cause of the fire was a resident grinding metal close to tall dry grass.
Asotin County Fire District #1 Chief Noel Hardin said fire danger in the valley has moved into an extreme level. He says people should use caution when working near dry grass, driving any vehicle in dry grass and have a water source available if having a camp or recreational fire.
No homes were damaged in this fire, however there were various fences destroyed. There were no reported injuries.
