AAA: Idaho gas prices rise seven cents as fuel demand increases

BOISE, Idaho — Average gas prices in Idaho climbed seven cents over the past week as fuel demand rose and refinery production declined amid cold weather, according to a Monday report from AAA Idaho.

AAA reports the statewide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is now $2.85, up seven cents from a week ago and two cents higher than a month ago. Prices remain about 25 cents lower than this time last year.

Nationally, the average price stands at $2.88 per gallon, roughly unchanged from last week but five cents higher than a month ago and about 22 cents lower than a year ago. Despite the recent increase, Idaho ranks 23rd in the nation for fuel prices, outside its typical placement among the 10 most expensive states.

AAA Idaho Public & Government Affairs Director Matthew Conde said several factors contributed to the recent jump, including freezing temperatures that slowed refinery production, rising demand as motorists fill their tanks, and higher crude oil prices.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gasoline demand rose by more than 900,000 barrels per day from the previous week. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate crude oil is trading near $62 per barrel, about $4 higher than a month ago but still roughly $10 lower than a year ago.

AAA officials say these conditions could continue to place upward pressure on fuel prices in the coming days.
