North-central Washington father arrested in Iowa after alleged infant homicide

OKANOGAN COUNTY, WA — A suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of a 3-month-old infant following a multi-state homicide investigation, according to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s officials said detectives with the agency’s Major Crimes Unit developed probable cause to charge 35-year-old Mickey Wheatley with first-degree murder in the death of his daughter, Ellie Leighton. Court documents state Wheatley is the child’s biological father.

Investigators determined Wheatley had left Washington state, and an arrest warrant was issued. Authorities located Wheatley in Iowa Falls, Iowa, with assistance from the United States Marshals Service, the Washington State Department of Corrections, and the North Iowa Fugitive Task Force.

Wheatley was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held at the Hardin County Jail pending extradition back to Washington to face charges.

The sheriff’s office said no additional information will be released at this time due to the ongoing prosecution.
