CLARKSTON, WA — Firefighters with Asotin County Fire District #1 quickly contained a small grass fire Friday in the 1100 block of 16th Avenue in Clarkston.
Crews were dispatched just before noon after reports indicated the fire was threatening nearby storage units and a power pole. When firefighters arrived, they found an approximately 100-foot fire line burning downhill from the roadside in tall mixed grass. Officials described the fire as slow moving.
Fire Chief Noel Hardin said the incident serves as an early reminder of the wildfire danger facing the region this season.
“This is just the beginning of a potential long season,” Hardin said. “Fuels are drying quickly and it won’t take long for conditions to reach extreme levels.”
Firefighters quickly contained the blaze and remained on scene for about 30 minutes extinguishing hot spots.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.
