LEWISTON, ID — Lewis-Clark State College alumnus Tony Havens has been named the school’s 2026 Outstanding Teacher Educator by the college’s Teacher Education & Mathematics Division.
Havens, a history teacher at Sacajawea Middle School, received the award during a ceremony held May 8 at the school. The award was presented by LC State associate professor April Niemela.
A 1995 graduate of LC State, Havens has taught at Sacajawea Middle School for 28 years. Colleagues described him as a strong communicator and team leader known for helping students stay engaged in the classroom.
According to the college, Havens is recognized for creating interactive learning experiences, including a popular Oregon Trail simulation where students work together in family groups as they travel westward.
“Students not only learn about the history of the Oregon Trail, they also learn how to work together as a team,” LC State history professor Amanda Van Lanen said in the release. “This is history instruction at its very best.”
In addition to teaching middle school students, Havens also mentors aspiring educators through partnerships with LC State. Several former student teachers and colleagues praised his ability to connect with students and support future educators entering the profession.
Coworkers also highlighted Havens’ dedication outside the classroom, noting his willingness to stay after school to support students academically and participate in school activities.
