Lewiston to host Public Works Expo during National Public Works Week

LEWISTON, ID — The City of Lewiston will recognize National Public Works Week with its annual Public Works Expo on Thursday, May 21, at the Nez Perce County Fairgrounds.

The free community event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is designed to give residents a closer look at the work performed by public works professionals throughout the region. National Public Works Week runs May 17-23 and is organized in partnership with the American Public Works Association.

Participating organizations include the City of Lewiston, Asotin County, Lewiston Orchards Irrigation District, Sunshine Disposal, Clearwater Composting and Idaho Digline.

Expo activities will include demonstrations and exhibits focused on infrastructure, utilities and environmental services. Visitors will be able to explore an interactive Geographic Information System (GIS), learn how GPS is used to document city services, view wastewater jet cleaning demonstrations and watch video inspections of utility lines. Additional displays will cover storm water quality, water system backflow prevention and the process of moving water from the river and back again.

City officials said the event is intended to increase awareness of the responsibilities handled by public works departments while also introducing career opportunities within the field. This year’s National Public Works Week theme is “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community.”

The Public Works office at 215 D Street in Lewiston will have limited staffing from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the expo.
