Pullman man arrested after fire, SWAT response on Davis Way

PULLMAN, WA — A 36-year-old Pullman man was arrested Tuesday morning following a standoff and house fire in the 1100 block of Northwest Davis Way.

According to the Pullman Police Department, officers responded around 9:30 a.m. on May 19 to a report of an armed and suicidal person inside a residence. While officers were attempting to contact the individual, a fire broke out inside the home.

The incident prompted a large emergency response involving the Whitman County Regional SWAT Team, Washington State University Police Department, Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, Pullman Fire, and Whitman County Fire District 12. Nearby residents were evacuated or told to shelter in place while Davis Way was closed during the response.

Police said Thomas Nguyen was taken into custody by the SWAT team at approximately 11:42 a.m. He was transported to Whitman Hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being booked into the Whitman County Jail on a charge of first-degree arson.

Authorities thanked the assisting agencies for their coordinated response during the incident.
