ST. MARIES, ID — The Benewah County Sheriff’s Office says a reported school shooter threat made against St. Maries High School on May 13 was determined to be a false “swatting” call tied to a broader series of hoax threats reported across the country.
According to the sheriff’s office, investigators worked alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigation and found no credible threat to students, staff, or the public.
Authorities said similar false reports have recently been made at schools in multiple states, including some occurring the same day as the threat reported in St. Maries.
Law enforcement agencies, including the St. Maries City Police and Benewah County deputies, responded immediately on May 13 and treated the situation as a legitimate threat until the campus could be fully cleared. Deputies conducted searches, security operations, and investigative follow-up during the response.
The sheriff’s office acknowledged the fear and disruption caused by the incident for students, families, school employees, and the community.
Officials said false emergency reports and swatting incidents are serious criminal offenses because they divert emergency resources, interrupt school operations, and create unnecessary panic and mental trauma.
The investigation into the source of the false report remains ongoing. Authorities said those responsible could face prosecution under both state and federal law.
The sheriff’s office also thanked law enforcement partners, school administrators, faculty, parents, and students for their cooperation during the investigation.
