Asotin Police Issue Safety Tips for Door-to-Door Solicitors

ASOTIN, WA – The Asotin Police Department has issued a public advisory encouraging residents to remain cautious when dealing with door-to-door solicitors, highlighting potential risks associated with these transactions and offering tips to help ensure personal and property safety.

According to the department, residents should always ask solicitors to show a valid business or solicitor’s license before engaging in any transaction. While holding a license is not an endorsement of the business or product, it is a required permit to solicit within city limits. If a solicitor does not produce a license, residents are urged to call police.

Authorities also stress that residents have the right to ask any solicitor to leave their property. If a solicitor refuses, it may be considered trespassing and should be reported.

Chief M. Renzelman noted that although not all solicitors pose a threat, some may use the opportunity to scope out homes for potential future crimes. Residents are cautioned never to leave a solicitor unsupervised in their home and to be aware of suspicious behavior, such as requests to use the bathroom or attempts to access other parts of the residence.

The police also warn against sharing personal or financial information, including birthdates, Social Security numbers, bank account details, and credit card information. Transactions should be conducted in cash when possible to avoid identity theft or unauthorized account access.

Residents with concerns or questions are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement office. The department emphasized the importance of public vigilance, noting that community reports are essential for effective policing.

“Be safe,” Chief Renzelman stated. “We don’t always know what is occurring unless we are contacted.”
